Andes Weefgoed (Intro)

The SHI textile collection, online!

Between 1975 and 1985 the SHI/Fundación Andina purchased a broad collection of handmade textiles from the Peruvian Highlands and the North of Chili. In cooperation with local weaver-families different textile art forms were transported to the Netherlands. Among these, ponchos, girdles and belts, but also small and larger carpets. Exhibitions of these textiles, organized by the SHI/Fundación Andina in the Netherlands, Germany and Chile, contributed to a revaluation of this age-old Andean art.

A special part of the collection consists of Pre-Columbian fragments, dated from 700 to 1500 after C. In these fragments the rich textile history of the Andean region is easily recognized.

Currently, the whole SHI collection has been meticulously photographed en is accessible online (click here). High-resolution photo’s are available at a low price.

At present a description of every piece in this collection is being made. In due time these data will be incorporated into this website.

We would like to bring some depth into our collection; therefore your comments and information regarding the shown textile will be very much appreciated.
